The Warnings from our Loving Father
Throughout the Bible, God warns His people about dangerous teachings and corrupting influences that distort truth, hinder faith, and lead souls astray. In this article, we will examine several of these false doctrines: — Balaam’s error, Doctrine of the Nicolaitans, Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, Preterism, Idolatry, Sorcery, and Judaizing — by defining what they are, exploring what the Bible says about them, and identifying how these same errors manifest in modern religious culture. Scripture is clear: spiritual deception is not a relic of the past; it is alive and well today. We are called to discern and contend for the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3).
1. The Error of Balaam
Definition:
The doctrine of Balaam is the corruption of spiritual truth for material gain, often placing stumbling blocks before God’s people. It mixes financial ambition with the blessings of faith, exploiting the ministry for personal profit.
Scriptures:
-
Numbers 31:16 – Balaam taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before Israel.
-
Matthew 6:24 – You cannot serve God and mammon.
-
1 Timothy 6:5–10 – The love of money is the root of all evil.
-
2 Peter 2:1–3 – False teachers will make merchandise of you.
-
Isaiah 56:11, Jeremiah 6:13 – Greedy, covetous leaders exploit the people.
-
Romans 16:18 – They serve their own belly, not Christ.
-
John 2:16, Acts 8:18–21 – The Holy Spirit is not for sale.
Modern Applications:
The doctrine of Balaam is alive today in the prosperity gospel and the “word of faith” movement. Prominent figures such as Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, and Benny Hinn preach material gain as evidence of faith. They sell “seed faith” promises, turning the gospel into a business. Even the Bible itself has become a product twisted for profit, as seen in the work of people like Mark Ward, whose efforts deviate from truth in favor of marketability.
2. The Doctrine of the Nicolaitans
Definition:
The Nicolaitans represent lawless Christianity — unrestrained indulgence under the guise of liberty, embracing sin while claiming grace. This is the spirit of antinomianism: the rejection of moral law because of grace.
Scriptures:
-
Revelation 2:6, 15 – The Lord says He hates the deeds of the Nicolaitans.
-
Galatians 5:13 – Don’t use liberty as an excuse for the flesh.
-
Romans 6:1–2 – Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid.
-
Jude 1:4 – Turning grace into lasciviousness.
-
2 Peter 2:16 – Using liberty for a cloak of evil.
-
John 8:34 – Whoever sins is the servant of sin.
-
Matthew 23:15, Luke 12:16–21, Isaiah 22:13 – Self-indulgence leading to destruction.
Modern Applications:
Today’s “affirming churches,” which endorse LGBTQ lifestyles, universalism, and other perversions of grace, carry this spirit. The divorce culture, identity-based faith, and abortion-justifying theology all stem from the Nicolaitan attitude: “everything is permitted because God is love.” But this is not liberty — it is bondage disguised as freedom.
3. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (Spirit of Antichrist)
Definition:
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is not merely careless speech — it is the deliberate rejection and denial of the truth about Jesus Christ, His deity, His work, and the witness of the Holy Spirit.
Scriptures:
-
Luke 12:10, Mark 3:28–30, Matthew 12:31–32 – Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven.
-
1 John 4:2–3, 1 John 5:6–8, 1 John 2:22, 1 Corinthians 12:3 – Denying Christ’s nature and mission is the spirit of antichrist.
-
Hebrews 6:4–6 – Impossible to renew them again to repentance.
-
Mark 8:38, Matthew 10:32–33 – Deny Christ, and He will deny you.
Modern Bible Corruption:
Modern Bible versions often alter key verses that affirm Jesus as God, such as:
-
1 John 5:7 – “These three are one.”
-
1 Timothy 3:16 – “God was manifest in the flesh.”
-
Philippians 2:6, John 1:18 – Changing the testimony of Christ’s divine nature.
Such changes reflect the spirit of antichrist — the very blasphemy warned about in Scripture.
Modern Applications:
-
Mormonism – teaches Jesus became a god.
-
Jehovah’s Witnesses – say Jesus was a created angel.
-
Islam – claims Jesus was a prophet, not God’s Son.
-
Classical Theism – subtly denies the personhood and emotion of Jesus in favor of abstract, impersonal deity.
4. Preterism
Definition:
Preterism teaches that Jesus has already returned, especially in AD 70. Full Preterists claim that all prophecy has been fulfilled, including the resurrection and second coming.
Scriptures Warning Against It:
-
2 Thessalonians 2:3 – The day shall not come until the man of sin is revealed.
-
Matthew 24:23–27 – His coming will be unmistakable.
-
2 Peter 3:3–9 – Scoffers deny the return.
-
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 – Denial of the resurrection makes faith vain.
-
2 Timothy 2:15–18 – Hymenaeus and Philetus erred, saying the resurrection is past already.
5. Idolatry and Sorcery
Definition:
Idolatry is placing faith in created things instead of the Creator. Sorcery includes spiritual manipulation and superstition masquerading as power.
Modern Forms:
-
Crystals, lucky charms, horoscopes
-
Celebrities, influencers, and even priests or self as objects of devotion
-
The Word of Faith movement: claiming to be “little gods” with power to create reality
-
Sacerdotalism – the belief that grace flows through rituals and priests rather than directly from Christ
6. Judaizing
Definition:
Judaizing is making Jewish rituals and the Mosaic law necessary for salvation — including circumcision, Sabbath-keeping, dietary laws, or ceremonial rites.
Scriptures:
-
Galatians 2:14, 5:2–4 – Justification by the law nullifies grace.
-
Acts 15, Colossians 2:16 – No ritual is to be imposed on believers.
Modern Applications:
-
Torah observance movements and Hebrew Roots
-
Ritual salvation systems — Catholicism, Orthodoxy, cults
-
Church membership, confirmation, infant baptism as salvific
-
Legalistic Puritanism – measuring righteousness by strict behavior or appearance
Conclusion
The same heresies that plagued the early church are alive and evolving today. Whether it’s Balaam’s greed, the Nicolaitans’ indulgence, or the Judaizers’ legalism, each error replaces God’s truth with man-made deception. Scripture calls us to try the spirits (1 John 4:1), earnestly contend for the faith (Jude 1:3), and to watch and pray (Matthew 26:41). Let us walk in truth, anchored in the unchanging Word of God — the King James Bible — and resist every wind of false doctrine that threatens to carry us away.
