Contrary to modern-day word of faith teachers. God chief concern is not to make us happy. On the contrary, our happiness is often at cross purposes to God’s hand on our lives. He wants us to be holy and righteous. He is a good father and as such does not want us to be happy in sin. No good father wants his children to delight in evil. When we feel bad for transgressions that is a good thing. But that is only one example. All of our emotions are mere resulting consequences, mental responses. They were never meant to lead us or guide us.
Food tastes Good
Let us look at eating as an example. The pleasure of eating is a blessing that happens as a result of eating. But when we get the result out of place and begin to eat just for the pleasure then bad things are bound to happen. We should eat to be healthy and enjoy the tastes of good healthy food. We all know that pleasure food is almost always bad for us. Especially if we make it our entire diet or motivation for eating. The pleasure of eating is a blessing properly enjoyed when we eat for health. In the same way, happiness is a result of doing things but should not be our motivation. Pursuing temporary happiness is fleeting and frivolous. The emotion is merely a blessing of actions. If we focus our actions on doing the good works that God has prepared for us to do then our happiness is even sweeter and accompanied by something even better: Joy.
Joy is better anyway
God does not want you to be happy, he wants you to be righteous and then he knows the result will be joy. Happiness is a conditional expression of elation based on external stimulus. Joy is an internal sense of contentment and well-being caused by a spiritual experience of self-sacrifice, gratitude, or thankfulness.
